ITunes and the iPod use MPEG-4 AAC audio for sound files so playing them involves extracting this data from the data atom of the sound file and passing it to an a capable renderer such as iTunes or QuckTime which are accessible from managed code via COM.
These files are name-magled so in order to read information such as the track and artist name one must extreact it from the udata atom of the sound file itself. Free application to transfer music and video files from an iPod/iPod Touch/iPhone to a PC. Using tools like euPod (which adjusts the gain per track) doesnt have any effect. Plus, I have a problem (also reported by Phil on July 12) where the maximum volume is restricted after using SharePod. Id love to see an AutoFill feature though.

There are some nice features on ITunes but I do not like how big it has become and there is no way to install it with out items I do not want. SharePod 3.4 is fantastic and very nearly replaces iTunes for me. Easy to use and handles all my needs to backup/sync my music with out the need of iTunes. I can't speak about the current generation (Touch) devices because they have changed things but I do know that prior to this the songs were stored within the iPod_Control directory. SharePod 3.9.5 is available (as of ) and it works great with the iPod Touch. Although not open source, his enthusiasm is highly sought and anticipated. I am afraid that it will affect his personal life.
